The most significant infrastructure development, representing the success of engineers is the construction railways. It is helpful in bridging the gap between various cities and facilitating users to have a guarded and comfortable journey at affordable rates. According to a data Indian Railways has a route length of 67,368-kilometre (41,861 mi) and a total track length of 121,407-kilometre (75,439 mi) as of March 2017. Routes are electrified with 25 kV AC electric traction while 33% of them are double or multi-tracked. Indian Railway (IR) runs more than 20,000 passenger trains daily, on both long-distance and suburban routes, from 7,349 stations across India. As of March 2017, Indian Railway’s rolling stock consisted of 277,987 freight wagons, 70,937 passenger coaches and 11,452 locomotives. With such an expansion it requires a lot of technicalities to manage these effectively. New technologies are being adopted to make the Indian railways operate much smoother way, big data analytics is taking a major part in it. Big Data analytics technically refers to examining large and varied data sets or big data in the structured, semi-structured and unstructured form to unscrew information including hidden patterns, unknown associations, within a very less span of time.

Having the fourth-largest rail network in the world and with the second-highest population in the world with a huge amount of booking each day, it’s not at all easy to manage and operate it effectively. Before the incorporation of big data analytics, it was very difficult to manually arrange all the scheduling of the trains, booking details, etc, it affected the timely running of railways. With big data enablement, the Indian Railway is coming back to the track, big data analytics enable automated, interoperable, interconnected, and advanced traffic management systems, scalable and upgradable systems, using standardized products and interfaces, which will enable easy migration.
Automatic Alternate Availability
With the new technologies, railway booking has been digitized and we can easily book online tickets. Big data analytics holds a major role in sorting between various passengers and providing them with the exact information. They also equip us with the feature of automatic availability of alternate trains in case we book a ticket on a particular train and the ticket is on a waiting list then we can automatically get the seat in alternate train according to our preference reaching to the same destination.
